Twenty-four miles southeast of Reno is historic Virginia City. The photogenic 19th-century community is the heart of the Comstock mining district, which was one of the West's largest silver discoveries. The Comstock mining district gave up tons of gold and silver to miners and once represented the richest lifestyles. Virginia City remains the main attraction of the district today with its wooden sidewalks and falsefront saloons, restaurants, and businesses. Visitors can take a ride on the reconstructed Virginia & Truckee Railroad, which operates between Virginia City and the adjacent mining town of Gold Hill, or visit the many museums that line its steep streets.

The Fourth Ward School Cultural Center, located in a multi-story school built in 1876, is open to visitors as is Piper's Opera House, which was built in the 1880s and hosted many of the 19th century's most famous performers.

Fifteen miles south of Reno in Washoe Valley is Bowers Mansion, an impressive, two-story stone house built in 1864 by Sandy Bowers, one of the Comstock's first millionaires. Adjacent to the mansion are shaded picnic grounds and a public swimming pool.

Carson City, located 30 miles south of Reno, offers numerous points of historic interest including the State Capitol, the Nevada State Museum, and the Nevada State Railroad Museum. The Kit Carson Trail is a self-guided tour of the city's historic district and winds past dozens of large Victorian homes that were once owned by the state's most prominent businessmen and politicians.

In addition, Virginia City itself is a great place for those looking to relax and take it easy for a bit. Come wander along the main street in downtown and enjoy the historic shops.

You can stop for a drink in a genuine saloon, or enjoy some old fashioned confections at the sweet shop. And, of course, it just wouldn't be Nevada if you didn't stop in for a few pulls of the slot machine, or a friendly game of cards.
