Balmorhea State Park In the desert flatlands of West Texas near the Davis Mountains lies the Balmorhea State Park and its popular centerpiece, the San Soloman Springs. For thousand of years, this spring provided water for Native Americans and later, for Spanish explorers and soldiers. Today, the park's deep pool over the spring attracts year-round swimmers and scuba divers. |

Largest Man-Made Swimming Pool Measuring 77,053 square feet, the Balmorhea Swimming pool is one of the largest man-made outdoor swimming pools in the United States. The spring yields over a million gallons of water each hour, keeping the pool water clean and clear. For years, visitors have enjoyed a refreshing dip in the chemical free water with an average 75 degrees year-round temperature. At the spring's source, the pool drops to a depth of 30 feet. Aquatic plants, animals, and several species of fish, thrive in this fresh water environment. They share their home with swimmers, snorklers, and even scuba divers. |

Desert Wetlands The Balmorhea State Park's newest attraction is a Cinega, or desert wetland. This project began in the 70's to restore an area of natural habitat and ensure the survival of several species of animals and fish threatened with extinction. Of chief concern were the Comanche Springs pupfish and the Pecos gambrusia, that over the many years had managed to survive in the giant swimming pool. Today, the 3-acre park-cinega thrives bringing new life to the arid and surrounding San Soloman Springs. Boardwalks and an observation platform at the park offer views to this beautifully restored desert wetland. |
Balmorhea Lake The Balmorhea Lake is located 3 miles south of the town of Balmorhea and provides a popular fishing and canoeing spot. The lake was restocked in 1998 and 1999 with over 80,000 bass, catfish and perch. Bird watching is a favorite at the lake, where over 300 species of birds have been identified. Facilities include a bait/fishing supply store with drinks and snacks. Overnight camping and picnic tables are available. |
