Activities

The most popular activity is the ¾ mile hike through the newly
developed Texas Native Garden. Campers find this a pleasant
respite
after a long day's drive. The native vegetation and many bird species
are a delight to the eye. Picnic tables under the covered patio are
for your convenience.

Amazing Wildlife The area in and around Balmorhea hosts an astonishing variety of birds; more than 300 species have been documented. The local lake and spring-fed swimming pool offer permanent residence or temporary habitat for migrating birds. Birding opportunities are available at Saddleback in the native plant garden. By providing native habitat as well as a small pond we can enjoy the birds that thrive in our desert. Be sure to look for the Burrowing Owl who lives in his brand new burrow created just for him along our nature trail. Birding tours can be arranged through the Balmorhea State Park office: 432-375-2370. |

Our Newest Addition Our newest adventure has been the creation of a ¾ mile nature trail, created and designed under the guidelines of the Texas Parks and Wildlife in order to qualify as a Texas Native Garden. All vegetation is native to the Trans Pecos region and attracts many bird and butterfly species. Inca, White-winged, and Eurasian Collared Doves are abundant. Western Kingbird and scissor-tailed Flycatchers hawk insects from April through October. Cactus and Rock Wren are regular visitors. Black-tailed Gnatcatcher, Verdin, Curve-billed Thrasher, Say's Phoebe, and Pyrrhuloxia are resident. Winter sparrows are abundant. Feel free to feed the birds. |

A Butterfly Bonanza As the butterfly garden develops, we expect increasing numbers of these flying jewels to find their way to this oasis in the desert. For those who prefer to sit and watch, each campsite has a Desert Willow tree that is a mecca for butterflies. |
