Local Interests

Although located high [3800'] in the San Diego Mountains, there are no end of interesting things to see and to do. On the premises activities change monthly: classes in subjects from watercolor, to making your own hiking stick, to star watching. In a 75 minute radius you can be at the beach in La Jolla, Zoo, Sea World, or San Diego's GasLamp Quarter. Other activities are much closer.

GO FISHING: Drive the scenic HWY 94 about 20 minutes to Lake Moreno. Bring your fishing gear and a picnic. You can rent a fishing boat and explore the lake while fishing for trout and catfish. There is a cool fish cleaning station so you can bring back your catch to grill the same evening.

The Train Museum
RIDE THE OLD TRAIN: The Train Museum at Campo is on 20 minutes from the Retreat. With a one and a half hour of train ride up to Miller Creek. Experience the West!
TAKE A SAFARI: The Wild Animal Park is about 90 minutes away. Drive Fwy 8 to HWY 79 at Descanso and head North through the old, western town of Julian. You could breakfast in Julian, then head down Hwy 78 toward Escondido. The Wild Animal Park is about 30 minutes from Julian. So you, too can feed a giraffe! Oh, don't miss Dudley's Bakery for phenomenal breads in between Julian and Ramona.

tecate
SHOP AND EAT IN TECATE: Get your shoes shined in Tecate! Hit the road again heading West again to Tecate, a little Mexican town 25 minutes from the Retreat. Tour the Tecate Brewery if so motivated and of course, the food is delicious, especially the 'coktail de camarones' - shrimp cocktail, kind of like gespacho with lots of shrimp. If you can find La Mission Restaurant, try the bacon-wrapped shrimp. A delight! And of course, shopping for hats, leather purses, silver jewelry, handcrafts, textiles, carved wood and more....
