Big Rock Ski Area
Big Rock Ski Area - Run by the Maine Winter Sports Center, this incredible facility aims to encourage the popularity of skiing among Mainers and visitors to the region. This is an incredible place for alpine (downhill) skiing, though Big Rock also has nine kilometers of cross-country skiing trails. The Center runs a snow school, youth ski races, and special festive events at Big Rock. You can choose from downhill runs that range from beginning to advanced (black diamond), snow-boarding, plus snow-shoe trails and night-skiing. In addition to the rental shop and cafe, where you can get everything you need for a day on the slopes and a warm break afterward, Big Rock is also a fabulous place to visit in the summer. Bring your hiking boots and camera for a day of climbing into the Maine hills! |

North Maine Woods
North Maine Woods - Welcome to the stunning forests of the north, a land peppered with lakes, rivers, and even moose. Set aside by landowners, corporations, and families, these 3.5-million acres of land are part of the North Maine Woods, an area that's set aside for hikers, backpackers, wildlife viewers, and nature enthusiasts to enjoy. Nearly all of this open, forested property is set between the St. John and the Allagash rivers. Bikes, horses, motorcycles and ATVs are not allowed in the Woods, but this is an incredible place for backpacking -- just be aware that this land has no set trail system. You might find your best hiking along a logging road or service road, many of which cut through this amazing area. |

Can-Am Sled Dog Races
Can-Am Crown International Sled Dog Race - When you visit Northern Maine, you can witness the start of the most challenging sled-dog races in the Eastern United States. Dress warmly, and go to Fort Kent to watch the beginning and end of three different races, a 30-mile, 60-mile, and a grueling 250- mile race. Rest up in the Lonesome Pine Ski Lodge while you watch the competitors cross the line at the end of a race, or cheer on the starters as they speed down Main Street. This free event takes place early in March and draws mushers and sled dogs from all over the country. You'll see primarily Alaskan and Siberian Huskies in the race, plus mushers from both the U.S. and Canada. Each year, one winner from each country is crowned champion. |

Acadian Festival
Acadian Festival - In 1755, the British government exiled a group of people known as the "Acadians," former French citizens who were then living in Nova Scotia. Many of the women and children who fled arrived in the upper valley of Aroostook County, Maine, and settled there. Their men and young boys were exported mainly to the Louisiana-coast area. In remembrance of their cultural heritage, the town of Madawaska hosts the annual Acadian Festival in late June each year. This fun, colorful event includes a mountain-bike race, a parade, picnics, French-cultural demonstrations, tournaments, and talent shows. Cultural food that is still enjoyed presently is naturally a part of the festival -- you can choose from a wide range of dinners and lunches as you take in the live music and entertainment of the past. Kids love the treasure hunt, drawing contest, magician, and everyone enjoys the reknowned and hilarious bed race. |
