| Birding - Calhoun County, consisting of seven bays including Lavaca Bay, is a migratory route for 400 species of birds and a wintering ground for the endangered Whooping Crane. There are eight birding sites along the coast as part of The Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. Some popular spots in the Port Lavaca area include Lighthouse Beach & Bird Sanctuary, the Formosa Wetlands Walkway, Magnolia Beach, Matagorda Island State Park, and Bayfront Park in Seadrift. Bring your binoculars to see reddish egrets, curlews, gulls, terns, and the rare peregrine falcons and wood storks.
| Shelling - Comb the beaches for unique and unusual shells to take with you as a souvenir and reminder of the beauty of the Gulf of Mexico. The miles of white sand and gentle waves are perfect for shell hunting and just
strolling along. Ideal spots include Lighthouse Beach, Matagorda Island State Park, King Fisher Beach in Port O' Connor, and Magnolia Beach.
| Picnicking - Enjoy an outdoor meal at one of the picnic tables in Lavaca Bay RV Park or find a spot on the beach or in a park along the coast.
