The beaches are also the best place to spot local bird species including reddish egrets, curlews, terns, and the endangered peregrine falcons.

Visit the old Indianola townsite rich in history and the historical Half Moon Reef Lighthouse. The Port Lavaca area has more than 30 historical markers and several natural areas worth visiting. The Formosa Wetlands Walkway and Lighthouse Beach feature sweeping vistas of the bay and prime opportunities to glimpse gulls, pelicans, and any of the 400 species of birds nearby. The Port Lavaca Fishing Pier is a great venue for some relaxing afternoon fishing and is next to the Lighthouse Beach & Bird Sanctuary.
