| Mount Rushmore National Memorial - This striking and unusual monument holds its own place in American patriotic history. Begun in 1927 by sculptor Gutzon Borglum, the project took fourteen years and four hundred workers to complete. On the mountain, you'll see the faces of four former presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Take the short hike from the Visitor's Center to the viewpoints, admiring the local ponderosa pine forests along the way. A number of hiking trails also lead to granite peaks with incredible views of the Black Hills and beyond. Be sure to watch for wildlife and wild flowers as you examine this amazing monument. |

| Crazy Horse Memorial - Inspired by the faces carved onto Mount Rushmore, the people of South Dakota organized the Crazy Horse Memorial, an enduring monument to Crazy Horse, a Lakota chief who was known for his loyalty and upright character. Following a design made by sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, work on this monument continues today. Visit the Crazy Horse Memorial and join others in honoring this great Lakota hero whose life was cut tragically short. Crazy Horse's pose in this mammoth carving stands in answer to the question, "Where are your lands now?" As the carving depicts, with a gesture of Crazy Horse's hand, his answer was, "My lands are where my dead lie buried." |

| Wind Cave National Park - Set in the prairies and ponderosa pine forests of the Black Hills, this is one of the longest and most complex caves in the world. Visit the Wind Cave to go spelunking and exploring in this remarkable system of caverns, admiring the unusual boxwork formations that resemble stone honeycomb. Choose from five different types of cave tours that vary in length, focus, and difficulty level. After you've seen the dramatic formations of the cave, come above ground to learn about the plants and wildlife that live at the monument. You can take a two-hour prairie hike with a park ranger and hear about the bison, bats, and bunnies that call this place home. |

| Mickelson Trail - Set in the heart of the Black Hills, this bike trail leads from Deadwood to Edgemont with spurs at towns like Custer, Hot Springs, and Hill City. The trail crosses more than 100 converted railroad bridges, allowing bikers to experience the Black Hills without the hassles of cars and traffic. The trail is well marked with regular mile-markers, so you can create your own routes and loops along its length. Travel through national forest land, doing some wildlife viewing and bird watching along the way. You can even print the online birding guide before you go. In late September, the trail celebrates the annual Mickelson Trail Trek, a three-day, 109-mile ride through the heart of the Hills covering the same path taken by legends such as Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. |
