Tahquamenon Falls is the 2nd largest waterfall east of the Mississippi River. With a drop of roughly 50 feet and over 200 feet across, the maximum flow ever recorded was 50,000 gallons of water per second. In the spring, after the snow starts thawing and the ice starts to melt, the water thunders over the Falls, so much so that at times you can feel the ground quake from quite a distance away. Regardless of the season that you visit the Falls, it is always a spectacular site. In the winter, the Falls can look like a very large root beer float. The contrast of the aqua colored ice cycles that form from the small cliffs on either side of the falls is a spectacular view. The Falls is one of the more popular destinations for snowmobilers too! There is also a X-Country ski trail at the Upper Falls. The Lower Falls is 4 miles down river and offers views of smaller, cascading waterfalls. In order to view the Lower Falls in its entirety you should take the row boat ride over to the island that the Lower Falls surrounds, then enjoy a leisurely stroll around the island!

Whether you are coming to our area to fish, canoe, take pictures or just sit quietly by one of the lakes and listen to the water lapping at the shore, water opportunities abound in the Newberry area! Newberry is the county seat and Luce County has over 300,000 acres of public access forest lands, 15,000 acres of inland lakes, 658 miles of rivers and streams and 31 miles of agate beaches on Lake Superior!
