Nestled in dense forested land, Cherokee Hills Campground once held an encampment of Cherokee people who fled the Trail of Tears soon after their trecherous crossing of the Mississippi River in the harsh winter of 1838-39. The campground is surrounded by area that played a huge part in the history of the Mighty Mississippi River. Southeast Missouri State University is located in Cape Girardeau which is 13 miles from our park.

Trail of Tears State Park, which was once known as Moccasin Hollow, is where a large band of Cherokee crossed the river on the Trail of Tears. Their interpretive center tells the story of the Cherokee people and their plight. Within the boundries of the State Park is Lake Boutin where you can fish or swim.

At Cherokee Hills Campground you can sit back and relax with a campfire made with native wood cut from our forest and enjoy the peace and tranquility we strive to provide for the weary traveler or those who wish to camp away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Our objective is to provide you with hospitality and afford you a place to relax. We have RV pull-throughs, electric sites and primitive sites as well as two rental units. We are open year round and do have weekly and monthly rates.
