Sedro-Woolley, Burlington, Mount Vernon, La Conner

As it reaches Puget Sound, the Skagit River has deposited a vast triangle of flood plain soil and nutrients to create some of the richest agricultural land in the Northwest.

Dotted with trim farmhouses and big red barns, the Skagit Valley is home to the largest commercial bulb industry outside of Holland. Beginning in March and continuing through May, the entire valley is one huge carpet of blooms backdropped by dramatic views of 10,775' Mount Baker and the Cascades. The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival in April brings thousands of visitors who come to see and photograph the blooms.

Nestled beside the Swinomish Channel, picturesque La Conner is a unique combination of fishing village, artists' colony, and tourist destination. Excellent accommodations and first-class restaurants with views of the water and Mt. Baker mix with the eclectic group of shops and galleries downtown. Be sure to visit the Museum of Northwest Art, the Skagit County Historical Museum, and the Gaches Mansion (home to the new Quilt Museum). Its annual Tulip Festivals attract thousands of visitors from US and Canada.

Whidbey & Fidalgo Islands

Anacortes, Oak Harbor, Coupeville, Langley, Clinton

Washington's islands are among the most attractive destinations in the West. Placid bays, forested shorelines, rural inland landscapes give the islands the atmosphere of private, secluded retreats. Because their roads generally have very little traffic, the islands are favorite destinations for bicycle touring. Two of the most easy to explore islands are Fidalgo and Whidbey.

Anacortes, on Fidalgo Island, is a bustling small port city, gateway to the San Juan Islands and Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Automobile ferries connect Anacortes with four of the San Juan Islands - Lopez, Shaw, Orcas, San Juan - and provide service to Sidney, B.C. near Victoria. The city has some lovely parks, great gallery browsing and excellent antique shopping. It makes a good base for day trips to the San Juans, especially in summer when hotels on the islands are often sold out.
