Frontier Texas! - For a unique blend of modern technology and revived history, visit this 14,000-square-foot facility in downtown Abilene. At Frontier Texas! you'll find interactive exhibits that use state-of-the-art technology to demonstrate life was like during the frontier days. Follow the "Century of Adventure" exhibit to learn about the time of buffalo, Indian culture, and the hardships of settlement in the Old West. This is a great experience for kids of all ages! Tour through the museum, then stop off at the General Store for excellent gifts, books, toys, house wares, and clothing. local1
Frontier Texas!
Abilene Zoo - Located in Nelson Park across from the Taylor County Expo Center, the Abilene Zoo is a fabulous place to view both plants and animals. See more than 700 animals from Africa, Asia, North America, South America, and Australia! You'll see elephants, lions, zebras, giraffes, ocelots, primates, and meerkats, just to name a few. Learn about adopting a zoo animal or plan to hold a birthday party right on the zoo grounds. Arrange to take part in a zoo tour or wander through the grounds at your own pace, stopping to admire the wise and witty faces of the turtles, monkeys, and flamingoes. local2
Abilene Zoo
The Grace Museum - Tour three museums in one at the historic Grace Museum in downtown Abilene. This elegant building is home to the Art Museum, the History Museum, and the Children's Museum -- all under one roof. Create your own art by playing with the Edward Weiss Interactive Wall Sculpture, then see the old-fashioned boot shop in the History Museum. View paintings by Texas artists and moving exhibits like "The Inventions of Leonardo da Vinci" or "American Pattern Paintings: Wooden Quilts." The permanent collection includes stunning paintings, ceramics, and photographs. This gorgeous, revival museum building is also a piece of art in itself. local3
The Grace Museum
Buffalo Gap Historic Village - Explore the world of frontier Texas in Buffalo Gap, a collection of preserved historic buildings where actors and actresses gather to bring history to life. See more than a dozen original buildings from the early 1900s, including the two-room schoolhouse. You can view the collection of arrowheads, see the antique medical instruments, or visit during one of the living history gatherings to watch a blacksmith at work. See recreations of Davy Crockett, Meriwether Lewis, and Will Rogers, or learn about rustic cooking from a buffalo hunter.
