Experience Island Life
At Big Bay Town Park

Board the ferry to Madeline Island in Wisconsin and be transported by the beauty of Lake Superior as you camp at Big Bay Town Park. Owned by the Town of La Pointe, the park provides views and entrance to the dazzling Big Bay Lagoon and the 1 ˝ mile beach shoreline of the Great Lake. The Town calls it "likely the most spectacular natural resource in Wisconsin with public access." Big Bay Town Park is located 7 miles from the La Pointe ferry landing. The park is open year around, with the only bathroom available being a privy from late October to mid May.

Madeline Island, the largest of the Apostle Islands, blossoms in the summer with the arrival of tourists. Bars, restaurants and shops beckon before or after an invigorating swim, hike or bike ride. Rent a kayak or canoe at Big Bay Town Park to really explore the waters. Apostle Islands National Lakeshore encompasses 21 islands, not including Madeline Island, perfect for activities like  fishing, hunting, hiking and scuba diving. The islands are noted for historic lighthouses, the largest collection in any National Park. Guided tours are given from mid-June to September.

It is an exciting time for the park, and users will find a new entrance, an organized parking area, a new picnic shelter with fireplace for day trippers and campers alike, a woodshed, 900 ft of new beach boardwalk, a new comfort station with a park attendant office, pay showers and flush toilets and new flush toilet bathroom at the far end of the campground. You will note all roads are now one way, including through the parking lot, so please pay attention to signage and parking directions.

There is new reconfigured numbering for 61 campsites, including the 23 new sites, 22 with electric, in the campground addition across the road. Also available are six new remote, tent only campsites, along the Lagoon Ridge Trail. A new handicap accessible boardwalk to Big Bay Beach is in the works. Check out the links to the left to find out more about government and amenities offered by the island and surrounding communities.
