| Matagorda Island State Park - This wildlife management area, or WMA, is a haven for migratory birds, white-tailed deer, and saltwater fish. The island itself is 38 miles long. It varies in width -- from less than a mile to nearly five miles -- and is home to 19 state- or federally-listed threatened or endangered species. You'll find alligators, migratory birds, and plenty of room for hunting and fishing. On the island's northern end, look for the lighthouse, built in 1852. More than 56,000 acres of offshore barrier island land and bayside marshes make up the WMA, an area that's managed jointly by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Texas Parks and Wildlife. |

Matagorda Island Lighthouse
|
Matagorda Island Lighthouse - For the past 150 years, the Matagorda Island Lighthouse has kept silent watch over Pass Cavallo, directing ships to keep off its dangerous shores. Located at Matagorda Island State Park, the lighthouse was originally built completely of cast iron in 1852. Painted in red, white, and black stripes, the lighthouse guarded the entry to Matagorda Bay. Visit the lighthouse on your own or take one of the Park Service's educational tours: the history tour, the lighthouse and gravesite tour, the migratory bird tour, and the beachcombing tour. All tours begin in Port O'Connor at the Texas Park and Wildlife Headquarters. |
| Port Aransas - On the northern tip of Mustang Island, you'll find the fun coastal city of Port Aransas, Texas, a fishing and bird watching mecca. From golfing and kayaking to shopping at the city's many boutiques and shops, you'll find plenty to enjoy in this sparkling town. Their excellent restaurants offer fresh seafood, international flavor, and special island-style cooking. Boating and fishing are naturally popular in Port Aransas, as are beach sports and sea fishing. If you're out exploring Mustang Island, Port Aransas makes a fabulous lunch destination, with a variety of options from quick bites to cafes and seafood grills. |
