|
| Bastrop was once a candidate for the capital of Texas. Land prices during the selection process eliminated Bastrop for Austin as the site of the Capital. |

| In the "old town" district, the June Hill Pape Riverwalk meanders along the Colorado River through stands of pecan and pine trees. From the south, the walk begins at the Bastrop Ferry Park and ends to the north at Fisherman's Park. |

| Fisherman's Park, to the north of the old town district, offers children's playscapes, picnic sites, a boat launch, large gathering pavillions, sports fields, and on the bank of the river, a flock of spoiled water fowl who hold court on a daily basis. |
